Tom Pidcock sprints to 5th in opening stage of the Giro d’Italia
The Giro d’Italia got underway in Albania, with a tough 160-kilometre stage that tested the peloton with a reduced bunch sprint in the capital city. Q36.5 Pro Cycling Team’s Tom Pidcock finished an impressive fifth, launching his Giro debut with sharp form.

The stage concluded with two short but steep climbs inside a hectic finishing circuit, shaking up the group and narrowing the fight for the line. With sprinters losing contact on the final ascent, it was up to Pidcock and Howson to represent the team in the front selection of 36 riders.
In true Tom Pidcock fashion, he found his position in the reduced sprint and powered across the line in fifth.
“It was a hard stage, but I’m happy to make it through with a good mindset and result,” said Pidcock. “With 20 stages to go, I am looking forward to the next 20 stages”
The stage was always going to be unpredictable, and we executed our plan well.
"We showed we are in the game."
Gabriele Missaglia
“In my opinion, we did a good race,” said Sports Director Gabriele Missaglia. “The whole team worked together to protect our leaders. The goal for the first three stages is to stay safe, especially at the start of a Grand Tour. Today, we stayed in control, we were there in the final, and we showed we are in the game.”
With two more stages in Albania to come—including a time trial—the team remains radar-focused.
