Fabio Christen sprinted to a second place in Schwarzsee in the second stage of the Tour de Suisse. The 22-year-old Swiss rider chose the right move in the final kilometer after his brother Jan was caught after a late move. In a direct sprint with Vincenzo Albanese he had to settle for second.

“I looked forward to today. This was a stage I had done a recon of one month ago and knew what was coming. It was all in my head,” Fabio said directly after the finish. “I knew there would be attacks. It was my brother who attacked but I knew I had to wait because attacks would probably not make it on this finish. I think I launched my sprint at the right moment but Albanese chose the same time. He took the shorter line and I didn’t have time to go around him.”

The Q36.5 Pro Cycling Team with Sjoerd Bax, David de la Cruz, Gianluca Brambilla, Marcel Camprubí, David González and our Swiss duo Matteo Badilatti and Fabio Christen showed they were more than ready for today.

“The team did a great job keeping me at the front in the final 10 kilometers,” Fabio continued. “My dream is to win a stage here in Switzerland. The legs are obviously good and the team is strong. That gives morale so we will keep trying.

Sports director Michael Albasini saw a very committed team on the roads from Aarau to Schwarzsee.

“I thought there might be a bigger breakaway today,” he analyses. “Yesterday we had that big breakaway with Sjoerd and Matteo. It was a hard day today as well but in the end the sprinter teams went for it which was good for us.”

“The team around Fabio was strong and committed which was great to see. He clearly had the legs to win but there will be more chances. I know tomorrow’s finish in Heiden very well because Peter Sagan beat me there once. Tomorrow’s start is tricky so it could be a breakaway day. However, Fabio and the team are looking strong so we hope to have another chance to show our Swiss team on Swiss roads again tomorrow.”
