Fabio Christen concluded the Tour of Slovenia in fifth place after sprinting to fourth place on the final stage on Sunday. He also wins the points and king of the mountain classifications.
The 22-year-old from Switzerland won stage two and kept up his great performance in the hardest stage of the five-day race on Saturday where a 13-kilometer long finish climb decided the general classification. Fabio lost his leader’s jersey that day but strongly defended a fifth place in the overall on Sunday.
“That last stage was a superhard one,” Fabio reflects. “It was full gas from the start, very short and with more than 2,000 meters of elevation. I must say I felt the legs after four stages so I tried to race hard but not blow up. On the final circuit it was great to have Marcel Camprubí still with me. I knew I had to go in first or second in the last corner but was a few places back. In the sprint I did have the highest speed but it was not enough to win.”
Christen who returned from altitude camp before Slovenia didn’t start the race with the overall classification in mind but is happy with how it all played out.

It gives a good boost of confidence for his home races in Gippingen on Friday and the Tour de Suisse that starts Sunday.
“To come home with these results – a stage win and fifth overall – and two jerseys is a great bonus. With some rest after this race and altitude camp I should feel even better. I am very excited about the Tour de Suisse. It’s the first time I race it and as a family we always watched it on tv. Then two days before I also race my real home race in Gippingen alongside my brother.” Fabio says.
“We are both on two wins this year which is very special. I can’t wait to race on home roads with friends and family there. I dream of taking the leader’s jersey in Tour de Suisse. I don’t think I will be able to hide anymore after Slovenia because it’s clear to everyone I want a stage win so it will be extra hard but also extra special,” he concludes with a smile.
